The cities vision and optimism has given the residents and small business owners a much needed boost of confidence in the rebuilding of the once grand downtown Bremerton.

Bremerton is divided by the waters of Port Washington Narrows into what the local residence refer to as East Bremerton and West Bremerton. The areas are connected by the Manette and Warren Avenue bridges. Bremerton is a city of history and can boast many unique neighborhoods, such as Manette, with its art culture/Bohemian appeal in East Bremerton; Charleston, a back to yesteryear section of the city filled with some 1930 charm, and several others that will have you admiring rows of waterfront homes on the shoreline or looking to neighborhoods that will remind you of your childhood.

Bremerton – where you can walk the shoreline, watch eagles fish, watch whales play in a nearby inlet and where you can be in the Mountains or at the Beach in around an hour if you don’t stop and smell the flowers along the way.

Bremerton has been ranked by Money Magazine as one of the future hot spots among cities with under 250,000 residents. In 2002, Bremerton was listed as the eighth-best place in the West to live among population areas from 100,000 to 249,999.

==>Many residents don’t realize that Silverdale like Bremerton has history too. Many that have relocated to the area over the years might not realize that this economic hub exploded in the early 1970’s with the location of the new Trident Submarine Base to nearby Bangor. Local residents who sold property at just the right time became wealthy overnight. With progress some landmarks disappeared to be replaced by new schools and hosing developments. There was huge transformation in the Silverdale area with the Navy bringing thousands of sailors and their families to the area. The economic base of the area grew immensely.

Silverdale became the shopping hub of the West Sound. Located here is the largest shopping mall between Seattle and Tacoma.

Silverdale though expanding and bringing several shops and restaurants to the area still has a small town feel and no better place to find it than in “Old Town Silverdale” a small community right on the waterfront. There are gallery shops and casual cafes with magnificent views of the waterfront.

Here lies the waterfront park which offers a children’s playground, a public boat launch and moorage, along with picnic spots and a beach walking trail.

Silverdale is the home to Clear Creek Trail.

The Silverdale area of West Puget Sound is home to some of the newer home communities. Over the last several years there have been many “developments” built to include the Ridgetop area, Summerwind, Ridgeview, The Glenn at Quail Ridge and several others. There are also several newer townhouse communities such as SilverRidge and Breckenridge. Choices of home styles and neighborhoods abound in the Silverdale area.

NAVAL BASE KITSAP | FITNESS & SPORTS

Navy Sports & Fitness facilities offer a wide variety of programs and equipment. The gym facilities offer some of the top names in equipment, such as Universal, Nautilus, Cybex and others.

You will have a selection of three fitness facilities. NBK – Bangor, NBK – Bremerton and NBK – Keyport. Each offer personal training, conditioning, classes such as aerobics, workshops and other gym related activities. Check out each section for a more in-depth view so you can decide where you want to stay fit.

Bremerton Concourse West Center (pool & gym) located in bldg 502 touts itself as the Family Friendly Fitness Center. The center was designed so that parents could work out while being close enough to supervise their children. There is an infant play area and a toddler play area. You can get your cardio in while your kiddos make new friends.

Whatever your fitness level there is an activity at NBK. You can take a swim, spend some time on a treadmill or work on your legs using an elliptical. The variety of activity is endless.

NAVAL BASE KITSAP | NAVY EXCHANGE AND COMMISSARY SCOOP

You know the mission of the Navy Exchange System (NEX) is to provide us with quality services and goods at a savings while supporting quality life programs. You know that seventy percent of the profits are given back to the commands in the form of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) programs.

I have been in NEXs, BXs and MCXs all over the country. Some you like and some you don’t. Here you can choose between two Exchanges. There is a small Exchange located on Bremerton and a larger Exchange located on Bangor. I usually browse the Bremerton NEX, but if I want to find more variety I drive out to Bangor. Bangor has cosmetic counters, larger apparel section and because it is larger more of most everything. Both stores are clean and friendly. I always enjoy paying NO SALES TAX!

I am a Commissary shopper! I can’t imagine not shopping at the Commissary. Sure there are some things I might get out in town like fresh fruit or vegetables if they are not available at the Commissary but most of the time the selection is fine.

DeCA reports that shoppers can save an average of more than 30 percent on their purchases compared to price of the local economies. This savings is worth about $3,000 annually for a family of four.

I shop at NBK – Bremerton for daily needs since that is the location that is closest for me. If I am doing “big” shopping I head out to NBK – Bangor. I usually do all of my “holiday shopping” at NBK – Bangor. The difference is in the size and sometimes in the selection. NBK – Bremerton sometimes has real trouble with inventory control and the shelves can be bare around paydays and stay that way for a few days. I try to never shop on paydays but you know how it is.

I have shopped at several different Commissaries all over the country. I loved the Commissary in Groton, CT, the Commissary at Camp Pendleton is very nice and I really miss the Commissary at MCAGCC Twenty-nine Palms, CA. There wasn’t much at that duty station but the brand new Commissary was fantastic! I really like the deli and fresh seafood section at the NBK – Bangor Commissary. Here is a “tid-bit” – You can shop 7-days a week here in the Naval Base Kitsap area because Bremerton is closed on Tuesdays and not Mondays. Bangor is closed on Mondays. So just like the other Naval Base areas we have access 7-days per week in a “round about” way. If you are use to the facilities in San Diego just remember you aren’t in California anymore :).

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW

Naval Base Kitsap is located in Kitsap County of West Puget Sound on the Kitsap Peninsula. Naval Base Kitsap is composed of Naval Base Kitsap – Bangor and Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton. Naval Base Kitsap is part of the Navy Region Northwest. Bangor is the submarine community and Bremerton is the Ship community. Bremerton is also connected to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (IMF). Bremerton is located in the city of Bremerton and Bangor is located closely to the town of Silverdale.

Centrally located to both bases is Naval Hospital Bremerton which also falls under the Navy Region Northwest. NHB sailors and families use the facilities on Bremerton and Bangor. Naval Hospital Bremerton is a fully accredited acute care and obstetrical hospital. My husband was stationed at Naval Hospital Bremerton when I met him.

Kitsap Peninsula is located just across Puget Sound from Seattle. You can travel to Seattle via ferry or drive around by going over the newly designed Tacoma Narrow Bridge. Depending on the time of day and the traffic volume the trip to Seattle usually takes 1 ½ hours.

You are now in “God’s County”. The area offers some of the best views of mountains and water as well as some of the best boating and recreational opportunities in the Greater Puget Sound Area. Within a mile radius you have several attractions and facilities to visit and explore.

Naval Base Kitsap Part of CNR Northwest – Supporting Command to the Warfighter

Located on Bremerotn you will find fitness facilities, a commissary and a NEX. You will find the same facilities located on Bangor. The facilities on Bangor are larger as is the housing area. What I find nice is there is always a commissary open. The Bremerton Commissary is closed on Tuesdays, while the Bangor Commissary is closed on Mondays. Of course I really think that all commissaries should be open 7 days a week. What is this 1952!!

Kitsap County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington, named after Chief Kitsap of the Suquamish tribe. As of 2000, its population is 231,969. Its county seat is at Port Orchard, and its largest city is Bremerton.

Kitsap County was formed out of King County, Washington and Jefferson County, Washington on January 16, 1857. Originally named Slaughter County, it was soon renamed.

The United States Navy is of great importance to the county because it is the largest employer in the county, with installations at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport, and Naval Base Kitsap (which comprises former NSB Bangor, and NS Bremerton).

Kitsap County is connected to the eastern shore of Puget Sound by Washington State Ferries runs from Bremerton to Downtown Seattle , Southworth to West Seattle via Vashon Island, Bainbridge Island to Downtown Seattle, and from Kingston to Edmonds.

In addition to occupying most of the Kitsap Peninsula, Kitsap County includes both Bainbridge Island and Blake Island. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 566 square miles (1,466 km²), of which, 396 square miles (1,026 km²) of it is land and 170 square miles (440 km²) of it (30.04%) is water. According to Puget Sound Partnership, Kitsap county has over 250 miles (400 km) of saltwater shoreline.

The portion of the county north of Silverdale is often referred to as North Kitsap, and the portion south of Bremerton as South Kitsap.

The Kitsap Peninsula is an arm of land that is part of the larger Olympic Peninsula in Washington state (U.S.) that lies west of Seattle across Puget Sound. Hood Canal separates Kitsap Peninsula from the rest of the Olympic Peninsula. It encompasses all of Kitsap County except Bainbridge and Blake Islands, as well as the northeastern part of Mason County and the northwestern part of Pierce County. The highest point on the Kitsap Peninsula is Gold Mountain. The U.S. Navy‘s Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and Naval Base Kitsap (comprised of the former NSB Bangor and NS Bremerton) are on the Peninsula. Its main city is Bremerton.

Though earlier referred to as the Great Peninsula or Indian Peninsula, its current name comes from Kitsap County, which occupies most of the peninsula. It is thus the namesake of Chief Kitsap, an 18th- and 19th-century warrior and medicine man of the Suquamish Tribe. The Suquamish were one of the historical fishing tribes belonging to the Coast Salish people, and their ancestral grounds were based on the eastern shores of the Kitsap Peninsula. Seattle is named after the tribe’s most famous leader, Chief Sealth. The Port Madison Indian Reservation, located between Poulsbo and Agate Pass, is the modern Suquamish tribal center. The Kitsap Peninsula is also home to the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, another branch of the Coast Salish people, whose tribal center is the Port Gamble S’Klallam Indian Reservation at Little Boston located on the northwest coast of the peninsula.

The peninsula is connected to the eastern shore of Puget Sound by Washington State Ferries, which run from Bremerton to Downtown Seattle, from Kingston to Edmonds and from Southworth to West Seattle via Vashon Island, by the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from Point Fosdick to Tacoma, and to the northeastern shore of the main Olympic Peninsula by the Hood Canal Bridge.
